LinkSwitch®-XT Ideal for Power Supplies with Tight Output Requirements
SAN JOSE, Calif. – November 9, 2005 – Power Integrations (Nasdaq: POWI), the leader in high-voltage analog integrated circuits for power conversion, today introduced LinkSwitch-XT, the latest addition to its growing portfolio ICs designed for low-wattage power supplies. LinkSwitch-XT is targeted for applications in which tight regulation of output voltage and current are key design priorities. The new ICs support universal-input (85 VAC to 265 VAC) chargers and adapters with output levels of up to 4 watts, and may be used in open-frame applications up to 9 watts (230 VAC).
LinkSwitch-XT with EcoSmart® technology is ideal for use in chargers and adapters designed to comply with energy-efficiency standards for external power supplies. The simple ON/OFF control scheme of LinkSwitch-XT enables a high level of efficiency even at light loads, and reduces no-load consumption to less than 300 mW. The use of a transformer with a bias winding further reduces no-load consumption to less than 50 mW.
LinkSwitch-XT features a 700 V power MOSFET together with control circuitry on a single silicon die. Integrated safety and reliability features include hysteretic thermal shutdown for over-temperature protection, as well as auto-restart for output short-circuit and open-loop protection.
LinkSwitch-XT is the latest addition to Power Integrations' portfolio of low-power ICs designed to replace inefficient power supplies built around line-frequency transformers. The LinkSwitch family offers a variety of parts to meet a range of power levels and design parameters at universal input voltage:
- LinkSwitch-LP (LNK562-564): Ultra-low cost, loosely regulated power supplies up to 3 W
- LinkSwitch (LNK500-501, LNK520): Loosely regulated power supplies up to 3.5 W
- LinkSwitch-XT (LNK362-364): Tightly regulated power supplies up to 6 W
- LinkSwitch-TN (LNK302-306): Non-isolated buck converters up to 360 mA
Power Integrations'
LinkSwitch products are the only ICs designed specifically to replace linear chargers and adapters, which are being phased out as a result of new mandatory energy standards on external power supplies," said Doug Bailey, vice president of marketing for Power Integrations. "The
LinkSwitch-XT is easy to design with and provides power supply developers the key advantage of time to market as equipment makers prepare their products to support the standards that take effect in 2006.
"With the addition of LinkSwitch-XT, we now have a complete portfolio of linear-replacement ICs," Bailey continued. "The designer can choose his desired output characteristic and be guaranteed an energy-efficient design with the lowest possible cost. We have a LinkSwitch that fits every common charger and adapter application."
LinkSwitch-XT is available in lead-free, plastic through-hole DIP-8 and surface-mountable SMD-8 packages. Pricing in 1000-piece quantities for the LNK362PN, a 2.6 W part in a DIP-8 package, is $0.53 each. The LNK364PN, a 6 W part, is priced at $0.55 each. Small quantities of each type are available from factory stock, with production quantities available 4 weeks ARO.

LinkSwitch-
XT family can be found on the Power Integrations web site at
