New Low-Profile Switcher IC Delivers High Power for Height Restricted Applications
San Jose, Calif. - February 20, 2002 - Power Integrations, Inc. (Nasdaq: POWI), a leading supplier of high-voltage ICs for AC to DC power conversion, announced today the availability of a new low-profile through-hole assembly package option for its TOPSwitch-GX product line, the industry's highest power monolithic switcher IC family. Nine new devices, ranging in power up to 290 watts, are now offered in the industry standard TO-262 package for applications that cannot accommodate a TO-220 package because of height restrictions.
The new devices expand the range of applications supported by the TOPSwitch-GX family of switched mode power supply ICs, enabling designers to create switching power supplies with reduced size, high standby efficiency and lower system cost. The ICs are targeted for low-profile through-hole assembly in existing applications such as universal power adapters, video game consoles, LCD monitors, and other power supply designs that require heat-sinking but, due to specific design requirements, may have limited height available above the printed circuit board.
TOPSwitch-GX, introduced in late 2000, is a monolithic high-voltage IC family that cost effectively integrates a high voltage power MOSFET, PWM control, fault protection, and other control circuitry onto a single CMOS chip. Built-in features include soft-start for minimum overshoot and lower component stresses at start-up, frequency jittering for low EMI, under-voltage protection and overvoltage shutdown, current limit, and the company's energy-saving EcoSmartÒ technology. EcoSmart technology dramatically reduces energy consumption, especially in standby and "no load" conditions.
Pricing for the new TOPSwitch-GX TO-262 package devices in 1,000 piece quantities ranges from $1.55 each for the TOP242F, rated at up to 22 W, to $3.29 each for the 290 W rated TOP250F. Sample quantities are available now from stock with production quantities available 4 weeks ARO.
