Power Integrations New Reference Design Reduces Energy Waste in LCD Monitors and TVs

July 30, 2003
Standby Power Consumption Below One Watt Now Achievable in LCD Applications Up To 45 Watts

SAN JOSE, Calif. - July 29, 2003 - Power Integrations, Inc. (NASDAQ: POWI), the inventor of EcoSmart® technology, today took another step in enabling switching power supplies to meet all current and proposed governmental energy efficiency regulations. The company announced the availability of DAK-33, a new design accelerator kit for LCD monitor and television applications. The DAK-33 provides a reference design to both dramatically reduce energy waste and speed design time for AC-DC flyback power supplies using the company's EcoSmart technology and its highly integrated TOPSwitch®-GX high-voltage power conversion ICs.

The DAK-33 is the latest in a growing family of energy efficient, comprehensive reference design kits. It was created specifically to meet LCD monitor and LCD television power requirements. The kit contains a tested energy efficient 45-watt power supply adapter, PI Expert™ design software, TOPSwitch-GX samples, and extensive design collateral. In standby mode, the 12 V, 3.75 A adapter draws less than one watt of input power at 230 VAC while supplying 0.5 W to its load. The design operates over a wide input voltage range (90 VAC to 265 VAC) with greater than 83% efficiency at full power.

The new DAK demonstrates the features and benefits of TOPSwitch-GX, including integrated line under-voltage and overvoltage protection, current limiting, hysteretic thermal shutdown, reduced EMI, and low standby and no-load power consumption. The company's EcoSmart technology enables power supplies to meet all current worldwide energy efficiency guidelines that require a maximum power consumption of less than 300 mW under no-load conditions and less than one watt input power when in standby. Additional applications include computer peripherals, home appliances and other medium power applications requiring output power of up to 45 W. The DAK-33 is priced at $45.95 and is available now through the company's Web site at www.powerint.com.

In addition, for lower power applications, Power Integrations has made available the DAK-34, which contains a 30 W (12 V, 2.5 A) power supply, operating over a universal input voltage range (85 VAC to 265 VAC) with greater than 80% efficiency. It is priced at $31.95 and is also available from factory stock.
