New Enhanced Power Supply Software from Power Integrations Slashes Design Time

April 24, 2002
New PI ExpertTM Ver. 4.0 Supports Designs from 3 Watts to over 200 Watts

SAN JOSE, Calif. - April 24, 2002 - Power Integrations, Inc. (Nasdaq: POWI), released today a new version of the company's popular power supply design tool, PI Expert version 4.0. The PC-based software now offers a more intuitive user interface, faster execution speed and new productivity enhancing features. PI Expert automates the design of single and multiple output flyback power supplies using the company's TOPSwitch® and TinySwitch® product families.

PI Expert version 4.0 quickly determines the critical components for an efficient power supply design in five or less mouse-clicks. The improved graphical user interface enables engineers to increase productivity by allowing multiple designs to be opened simultaneously. This flexibility allows the side-by-side comparison of two designs, for example, one automatically produced by the software, with minimal input from the designer, and another designed manually, after the user has manually selected components. The best design can then be selected by comparing the results on-screen.

The software's execution speed has also been dramatically improved for reduced design time. Using "autodesign" to optimize for lowest cost or highest efficiency, PI Expert determines the best-fit power IC, input capacitor and complete transformer design details in less than a minute. Without PI Expert, the transformer, the most difficult and time-consuming portion of the power supply design process, can take hours of design time. Additionally, an expert system incorporating Power Integrations' real-world power supply design experience identifies potential component mismatches and provides alternative solutions. Other new features include a spreadsheet calculation tool and a viewer that allows designs created with prior versions of PI Expert to be viewed.

The CD-ROM contains the design software, an updated library of the company's data sheets and application notes, and demonstration files presented in spoken English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. With the ability to use English or metric units, and to select component sources in Asia, Europe or the U.S., PI Expert is truly a global design tool.

PI Expert is offered free of charge and is available immediately through the company's network of worldwide sales representatives. It can also be directly requested or downloaded from the company's web site at www.powerint.com.
