Newest TinySwitch Product Targets Information Appliances

SUNNYVALE, CALIF. - Sept. 13, 1999 - Power Integrations, Inc. (NASDAQ: POWI), a leading provider of high-voltage power conversion ICs, announces TNY256, the newest member of the TinySwitch family of integrated switchers. TinySwitch ICs enable the design of smaller, lighter and "greener" power supplies. The TNY256 adds new features and expands the power of TinySwitch by 45 percent, providing a cost-effective, Energy-Efficient solution to a wider range of applications. These enhancements target the needs of cell phones, handheld organizers, and other network-connected information appliances.

Extended Power Range

The TNY256 delivers up to 11 watts from a Universal input and up to 19 watts from a 230 VAC input. By expanding the power range of the TinySwitch family, the TNY256 is able to meet the needs of additional markets such as motor control, industrial control, ISDN, as well as the growing market for information appliances.

"As information appliances such as handheld organizers add Internet connectivity, color screens, and other features, their power requirements increase," commented Shyam Dujari, Director of Marketing at Power Integrations. "The TNY256 delivers very compact and Energy-Efficient solutions to meet the growing demands of the networked world."

Features

Three new features integrated into the TNY256 reduce system cost and component count. These features are auto-restart, line under-voltage sense, and frequency jitter. Auto-restart lowers secondary component cost by reducing short circuit current. Line under-voltage sense prevents voltage glitches during power up or power down. It requires only a single resistor to implement, eliminating four external components. Frequency jitter lowers EMI, reducing EMI associated filter component costs. The TNY256 also incorporates EcoSmart technology which lowers power consumption in light or no load conditions to less than 100 milliwatts.

Design Support Tools/Product Availability

In order to simplify the design process, Power Integrations is offering a Design Accelerator Kit, DAK-6, which includes an engineering prototype board, samples and full documentation. The DAK-6 can be requested through an authorized sales representative or the web site at: www.powerint.com.

The TNY256 is currently in production. In 10,000 piece quantities, unit prices are $0.80 for the TNY256P, an 8-pin DIP package, and the TNY256G, an 8-pin SMD package. The TNY256G is available in tape-and-reel or rails. Also offered in a TO-220 package, TNY256Y is unit priced at $0.99 in 10,000 piece quantities.
