New High Voltage Integrated Switcher for DC to DC Converters Available from Power Integrations

June 21, 1999
Low cost, low component count solution targets communications equipment

SUNNYVALE, CALIF. - Jun. 21, 1999 -- Power Integrations, Inc. (Nasdaq: POWI), a leading provider of high voltage power conversion circuits, announces the availability of the TOP412/414 high voltage integrated switcher family for DC to DC converters. These devices address the growing need for reliable, distributed power in communications equipment which drive the Internet.

Features

The TOP412/414 integrates a PWM controller and high-voltage MOSFET on a monolithic die, providing a compact solution unavailable from comparable discrete solutions. As few as 15 components are required for a 10 W, 5V isolated flyback converter which achieves over 80% efficiency. Total board space is only 19.2 sq. cm. (3.0 sq. in.). Fewer components result in higher reliability, critical to communication equipment delivering data or voice over the Internet.

The internal high-voltage MOSFET easily handles input voltages up to 90 VDC without the need for protection circuitry. The TOP412/414 also incorporates cycle-by-cycle current limit and thermal shut down which further lowers component count. The TOP414 can deliver 12W of output power from a 48 VDC input.

"Rapid growth of communication equipment and latest developments in Voice-Over-IP (Internet Protocol) is creating growing demand for dc to dc distributed power," commented Shyam Dujari, Director of Marketing for Power Integrations. "Now manufacturers of line cards, cablecom, XDSL and other communication equipment can take advantage of TOP412/414 to implement a simple, reliable, low cost solution for distributed power."

In order to simplify the design process, Power Integrations provides worldwide application support and design tools for the TOP412/414 family. A Design Accelerator Kit (DAK-5), is currently available. The DAK-5 includes a reference design board, samples and full documentation.

Availability

Both the TOP412 and TOP414 are currently in production. In 10,000-piece quantities, they are priced at $1.49 and $1.67, respectively. Devices are available in an 8-pin surface mount package in tape-and-reel. Samples and the DAK-5 are available through an authorized Power Integrations distributor or sales representative.
