USB Power Supply Reference Design Board Available From Power Integrations

February 9, 1998

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Feb. 9, 1998 -- Power Integrations, Inc. (Nasdaq: POWI), a leading provider of low cost power conversion integrated circuits, announces the availability of the RD6 reference design board for self-powered USB hubs. The Universal Serial Bus, or USB, is an industry standard interface which simplifies connecting peripherals such as monitors, printers and keyboards to a PC. The RD6 board provides a production ready solution for USB hub manufacturers, enabling faster time to market. The design is based on Power Integrations' TOPSwitch-II family of power conversion circuits which lower cost and component count through integration.

The RD6 demonstrates a complete power solution for self-powered USB hubs delivering up to 15W of output power. Two output voltages are provided, 5V for powering up to four downstream ports and 3.3V for powering a USB controller. The board accepts universal input voltages (85 - 265 VAC) allowing a single design to meet the needs of markets throughout the world. Efficiency is greater than 75 percent.

Self-powered hubs that can utilize the RD6 design are found in monitors, printers, multi-function peripherals and stand-alone hubs for legacy systems. According to Dataquest, 95 percent of PCs in 1998 will have USB capability.

Power Integrations provides a number of reference design boards. These are intended to assist designers in building power solutions based on the company's popular TOPSwitch products. The boards are designed to be a cost-effective platform for new designs. To further speed the design process, customers can download a "Design Kit" which includes a schematic, bill-of-material (BOM), transformer design and Gerber files for the RD6 from the Power Integrations' website (

The RD6 is available now from an authorized Power Integrations sales representative. Suggested pricing for a single unit is $50.
