Power Integrations Announces TOP209 For Stand-by Power Supplies In Computing and Consumer Applications

RD3 reference design board accelerates time to market

Sunnyvale, CA, November 18, 1996....Power Integrations Inc., a leading supplier of power conversion integrated circuits, announced today general availability of the TOP209, a very low cost switch-mode power supply IC for off-line power applications. The TOP209 enhances the TOPSwitch(R) family of power supply ICs by providing a device specifically optimized for low power, stand-by power supply applications. This device can deliver up to 4W from a 100/110/230 volts AC input or 2W from a universal supply (85-265 volts AC). With the TOP209, designers can build more cost-effective power supplies without the disadvantages of size and inefficiency that are inherent in alternatives based on linear and self-oscillating designs. To further accelerate designs a complete reference board based on the TOP209 is available.

Applications

The TOP209 offers a cost effective solution for Energy-Efficient PCs, televisions and the new internet appliances coming to market. Systems such as these typically power down when not in use and utilize a stand-by power supply to lower power usage and operating cost. The TOP209 was designed specifically to provide these systems the lowest cost stand-by solution with the highest efficiency in the smallest space.

According to Shyam Dujari, Director of Marketing at Power Integrations, "There are a number of Energy-Efficient systems which require stand-by power for features such as sleep mode or remote control sensing. The stand-by power supply is continuously drawing power and needs to consume as little power as possible. Solutions based on TOP209 can be designed to cost-effectively deliver anywhere from 100mW to 4W while typically being twice as efficient as competing solutions. It also reduces size and weight by eliminating up to 20 discrete components. No other solution can do this."

Product Description

The TOP209 reaches this level of performance by integrating a PWM controller and a 700V power MOSFET all in a single die. By integrating these two devices the TOP209 requires only three pins to perform the power supply switching and control functions. This level of integration also allows the device to fit into an industry standard 8 pin plastic DIP package, further lowering the system cost.

Besides integrating a PWM and power MOSFET, the TOP209 contains a number of additional features. These include a high voltage start-up bias circuit, bandgap reference, bias shunt regulator/error amplifier for loop compensation and fault protection circuitry. In addition, features specific to stand-by applications such as thermal shutdown with hysteresis are included.

"The TOP209, along with the higher power TOP210, offers system designers a level of integration which is not available anywhere else", commented Balu Balakrishnan, inventor of the TOPSwitch and a Vice President at Power Integrations. "Power Integrations has taken a simple CMOS process and added a high voltage capability without dramatically increasing cost. This enables our customers to cost-effectively integrate a power supply to the fewest possible devices while increasing performance and reliability."

To assist system integrators with faster time to market, Power Integrations provides RD3, a reference design board. The RD3 comes configured as a complete power supply capable of delivering 2W of output power (at 5 VDC) from a rectified and filtered AC voltage. By replacing a few discrete components the RD3 can also be reconfigured to provide 500mW or 100mW at even lower system cost.

The RD3 provides a number of features specific to stand-by designs. Besides the 5V output the RD3 includes a non-isolated, 12V output that can be used to provide power to the controller of the main power supply. Under voltage lockout (UVL) is implemented by directly sensing the AC line. Using UVL customers may build power supplies which can be reset in under one second.

The TOP209 is in production now and is priced at $0.89 in quantities of 10,000 units. Sample parts are available through an authorized Power Integrations sales representative. The RD3 reference design board will be available in December and is priced at $25.00 in single unit quantities.
